How to swap out an outdated Genius pin pad with a new one

Replacing your old Genius Pin Pad with an updated one:

Overview:  due to new credit card regulations and technology, older Genius pin pads need to be replaced with newer ones.  This is done essentially in two phases.  First, get the network information off of the old pin pad and second, put in the new pin pad and enter in the same network information.  If the steps are done correctly, you will not have to make any changes in Retail Pro or anything.  It is recommended that you replace one credit card terminal at a time in case you have trouble.

Phase 1 – Get the network information off the old Genius pin pad:

1.      On the pin pad, hit 000 (zero – three times) and then press Enter.

2.      When prompted for a password, type in 9416557 and press Enter.  You will get a screen like this:

3.      Tap Options and you will get a screen like this:

4.      Tap Network.  You will get a screen like this:

5.      Tap Network Settings.  You will get a screen like this:

6.      Write down the following: (note: you may need to scroll down to find all of the settings).

a.      IP Address

b.     Netmask

c.      Gateway

d.     DNS1

e.      DNS2

7.      At this point, you can unplug the old Genius pin pad and put it to the side.  Make a note of which pin pad was for what register just in case you need to put it back into place.

Phase 2 – set up and configure the new Genius pin pad

Note:  If you need more information, look on YouTube for setting up the M400 and you can get many videos that will help you – just keep in mind that some components might be slightly different and that some are specific to other POS systems, not Retail Pro.  In addition, these devices come pre-programmed from Global Payments to work at specific stores, so they cannot simply be swapped around from store to store.  In order to make one work for another store, the retailer needs to work with Global Payments Support directly to get it changed.

STEP 1:  Physically Assemble and Plug In the Pin Pad

Attach the utility cable

  1. Turn your Semi-Integrated M400 upside down and place it on a flat, stable surface.
  2. Remove the rear cover by sliding it up and lifting it off.

    2. Plug the 12V DC power adapter into a power supply. Your device will turn on.

Part 2 - Configuring the Pin Pad to be on the network

These pin pads can work on either LAN or Wi-Fi networks.  For stability, LAN setup is always preferred, however if that is not an option, Wi-Fi is the next option.  We will only go over the LAN setup in this document as it should be how everyone needs to be set up.  In addition, these devices come pre-programmed from Global Payments to work at specific stores, so they cannot simply be swapped around from store to store.

Step 1 - Ethernet Setup:

    1. Insert one end of the Ethernet cable into an available port on your router or switch.

  8. Set values for the following fields: (use the information from what you wrote down from the old terminal and enter it on the new terminal)
    • IP address
    • Subnet mask (aka “netmask”)
    • Gateway IP address
    • DNS 1
    • (Optional) DNS 2

Note: If you do not have 12 digits in your IP address, use zeros to complete your IP address. For example, to use the IP address 192.168.2.35, enter 192.168.002.035.

Step 3:  Apply your settings and return to the home screen:

  1. Tap twice.

Phase 3:  Test in Retail Pro:

1.      Go into Retail Pro and go to a new sale.

2.      Enter an item on a sale (or use the Fee or Shipping field to enter in a small amount like a penny)

3.      Go to Tender

4.      Click Credit Card and go through the authorization process.

a.      If the transaction is successful, you are all set for this register and can move on to the next register.  You can optionally run a refund for the same amount back to your card.

b.     If the transaction is not successful, call into the helpdesk for assistance.

5.      Repeat this process for each register at your store who’s terminals need to be replaced.
